St. Olaf Summer
Vacation Seminar

The St. Olaf Summer Vacation Seminar is back by popular demand, and this time we have planned something extraordinary: a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Dead Sea Scrolls with one of the leading authorities in Scroll scholarship! From July 11-17, 2010, the tranquil campus of St. Olaf College will welcome two exciting scholars giving 18 dynamic lectures to our numerous enthusiastic participants.

Dr. Peter Flint of Trinity Western University and Dr. Ziony Zevit of the American Jewish University will present what promises to be our most unique program yet, entitled Stories, Scrolls and Archaeology: The Biblical World Brought to Life. Plus, participants will have the opportunity to see the Dead Sea Scrolls during their last North American exhibit escorted by Dr. Peter Flint, one of the world's foremost authorities on the Scrolls.

The watershed exhibit The Dead Sea Scrolls: Words that Changed the World may be the last time the Dead Sea Scrolls appear in North America. Hosted by the Science Museum of Minnesota, this exhibit is just a 45-minute drive from St. Olaf. Dr. Peter Flint will personally escort the BAS program participants to this historic exhibit. He will bring the Biblical world to life as he guides you through one of the most important exhibits to come to North America in the last century. This may be your last chance to see the Dead Sea Scrolls in North America, and it is your only chance to see them with BAS and Dr. Peter Flint. For more information on the exhibit, visit the Science Museum of Minnesota online.

Peter W. Flint holds the Canada Research Chair in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies and is Professor of Religious Studies at Trinity Western University, Canada. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Flint has authored many studies on the Dead Sea Scrolls, including The Dead Sea Psalms Scrolls and the Book of Psalms (1997) and The Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls (2003). He has edited over 25 Dead Sea Scrolls for Oxford University Press, and recently completed the official edition of the Great Isaiah Scroll and the second Isaiah Scroll from Cave One (Oxford University Press).

Remember, the chance to visit the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit is just one of the highlights of the this program. During the weeklong seminar, Dr. Ziony Zevit's nine lectures will examine the role of short stories in the Bible, demonstrating how they help us understand the broader historical context of the Biblical world. Dr. Peter Flint's lectures will illuminate the context and meaning of the Scrolls, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
